I've found that the best-ever way to unwind from city life was to go to the forest and the farm. Just before taking my most recent road trip, I flew to Oregon for a reunion with my best friend, Betsy. We spent one day in Portland, splitting donuts and shakshuka eggs (here) and dodging rainstorms. The next day we woke up and drove to Bend, where Betsy lives and works on a farm. She made me the most comforting meals of homemade sourdough, chevré, squash soup, and roasted heirloom tomatoes. We went on gorgeous trail runs, drank at breweries, and soaked in this amazing soaking tub. On my last night in town, we had a dinner party with some friends and cooked up sausages from the farm, roasted root veggies and chestnuts, and passed around a few bottles of red wine. Oregon makes me want to going on a drizzly picnic, with warm drinks in enamel mugs and time to just stare at all the green.
